Segmenting Contacts Best Practices

What is the recommended way to segment my database so I can keep a certain group of contacts away from the rest of the automation that's running in my Eloqua instance? This separate segment is going to be a part of an email drip campaign and I don't want them to get mixed into the other email campaigns that I have running for our lead prospecting and newsletters. In addition to keeping these contacts out of other email campaigns I also don't want them syncing to Salesforce. If one of the contacts does convert on another asset on our website then I'd like to update that contact to be in the main segment. My CRM sync feeders shouldn't pick up on these contacts, so I think that part is fine. What I'm wondering about is the best way to segment my database on an ongoing basis. The new contacts for this segment are likely going to be added to Eloqua via an API; I'm still working with my developer on how that is going to work.
